Product Description

Mineral Insulated Cable, MI cable

 

MI cable are intended to be installed in critical safety circuits which are used to operate under fire conditions in severe applications where the mechanical cables performances are primarily required.

 

Production process foresee many steps of diameter reduction (both drawings and rollings) separated by high temperature annealing.

Strong compression of MgO powder (density about 2 g/cm3) allows very high values of insulation resistance (also if burned, 180° bent or flattened) and thermal conductivity. Therefore current ratings are higher than soft skin cables, especially at high temperature.

British Standard BS6387 covers the performance requirements and test methods for cables required to maintain circuit integrity under fire conditions, It has been developed to assist installation designers with their assessment of the fire performance characteristics of various types of cables and their selection for specific applications. In particular, it covers the cables' ability to maintain circuit integrity against set time and temperature parameters.

BS6387 covers fire resistant cables with a voltage rating of 300/500V and 450/750V. It also covers mineral-insulated cables manufactured in accordance with BS6207.

 

Fire Tests
BS 6387
Following tests are carried out to verify if a cable is capable of maintaining circuit integrity under fire condition, fire with water, and fire with mechanical shocks. During the tests the cables are maintained at their rated voltage.

The cable is exposed to fire at the specified temperature and time.

The cable is exposed for 15 minutes to flame at 650°C and for additional 15 minutes to fire and water spray

Fire Resistance with Mechanical Shocks (Cat. X Y Z)

The cable is mounted on a vertical panel and shocked with a steel bar for 15 minutes while submitted to the action of a flame.
